reading thru the post-gig dust and debris a fewcomments bothered me..yes, i know i shouldprobably leave it but sometimes a bit of clarity isimportant. a few people have questioned thevalidity of me playing songs that they seem tothink my only contribution to was writing thelyrics.funny that, i don't remember seeing themsitting there taking notes when the songs werebeing written . i won't bore you with amonalogue about how insulting this is to me buti feel i should set the record straight here onceand for all cos this is something which keepscropping up.

ok.. as far as iremember this is the absolutetruth... do with it what you will. with theanderson/butler songs bernard wrote thebacking tracks( chord sequences, basic musicalparts, rhythms and time signatures etc)and iwrote the voca melodies and the lyrics ontop.the keys and structures would often changeonce the song had been written, for example, inthe song Breakdown the chorus was originallywritten as the verse and vice versa. there were acouple of early songs ( he's dead and where thepigs don't fly) which were initiated by melodiesand chords i had written but they wereanomalies.apart from i think The 2 of Us , whereilet the vocal follow the piano line in the chorusalways wrote the top-line vocal melodieswhich were of course threaded within thepattern of the chord sequences which bernardhad written ). as with any band worth it's salt, the rhythm section's contribution is vital and Matand Simon( although not credited as writers)would always bring something special to thesongs as they took on shape and life beyond thestate of the simple musical sketches that meand Bernard had conceived.

The format changed with Coming Up and thesubsequent albums where i started to writemore complete songs and musical parts. apartfrom the songs credited solely to me as a writeryou might be interested to know that i wrote thechords to the verse of Trash and to the chorusesof Beautiful Ones and Saturday Night( andEverything Will Flow) and the songs She andFilmstar were written by me singing thesimplistic words and melodies to Richard whofitted the chords around them.i also wrote all ofCan't Get Enough except the middle 8 which Neiwrote.oh and whle lam on this tip, the songDown was written 100% by me but credited toAnderson /Oakes due to some legal issue withRichard's publishing contract. there are probablyothers but those are the main ones.

with my solo performances i have been veryconscious of not just blithely reproducing thesongs on stage as a zerox of what Suede didand where possible i have tried to change keysand arrangements and feels if only as some kindof mark of respect to the people that originallyplayed them.

well now you know. i have always deliberatelyunderplayed my role as a musician but whenpeople start to mis-interpret my modesty asineptitude i feel i must speak out in defence ofmy contribution to what i believe is amagnificent body of work.
